Planning A Safari

Planning your dream safari can seem like a daunting task when you consider that the continent of Africa is more than three times the size of the United States with over 50 different countries and over 2000 languages and dialects spoken. The good news is that you have an abundance of choice and that there is a safaris to suit everyones style.

An abundance of choice
Africa is blessed with great diversity. The scenic splendor of Cape Town, the towering dunes of the Namib Desert, the great lakes of the Rift Valley and splendid beaches on the Indican and Atlantic Oceans, the pristine waterways of the Okavango Delta, the majesty of Victoria Falls, exceptional bird life and great herds that roam the unspoilt winlderness, are all part of the African landscape.

Africa's oceans are home to the whales, dolphins, sea turtles, colorful coral reefs, and great white sharks. Ancient traditional cultures, art, colorful people, and World Heritage sites are a part of Africa's heritage. Innovative world-class crusine and find wines complete the African experience.

Here you can canoe, kayak, and raft the mighty rivers, walk amongst the wildlife, fish the dams, rivers, and oceans, scuba dive and snorkel, gold on outstanding courses, mountain bike, hot-air balloon, hike scenic routes, and safari on horseback, elephant or camel in prime wilderness areas. Africa is the cradle of mankind.

Experience the individuality

Accomodations vary from township B & B's to splendid country lodges, colonial homesteads and world-class luxury hotels and resorts. Your stay on safari may range from humble tents you erect yourself, to bungalows, to deluxe 5-star lodges where each room may boast its own swimming pool, even if the room has canvas walls and as such passes as a tent!

You may safari on foot, by vehicle, traditional dugout canoe and powerboat, and you may reach your destination by self-driving, scheduled airline, small charter aircraft, vintage aircraft, or luxury train.

Your dreams of Africa may involve any or all of the aspects above and you may choose to travel alone of with family or friends, to join a fixed departure of form a special interest group. Creative Safaris will personalize your safari itinerary to fullfill your individual dream.

With so many choices of places to go and things to see and do, and so many modes of transportation to move you around, narrowing down your choices and be rather intimidating. We highly recommend that you work with a professional travel consultant who can assist you in sorting through all these choices and help you determine your ideal safari.

There are several things you need to consider such as:

1) Do you want to join a small group on a set tour, or do you want a custom designed safari?

2) How many people will be in your party?

3) Will there be any children? If so, what are the ages of the children?

4) How long do you want the trip to be?

5) What types of activities are of interest to you?

6) How passive or active do you want to be?

7) What time of year are you planning to travel? How flexible are your dates?

8) Do you have an special interests?

9) Are you celebrating and special occasions? Wedding? Honeymoon? Anniversary? Birthday? Family Reunion?

10) What type of accommodation are you looking for? B & B? Tented? Luxury Lodge? Country Inn?

Budget
This is an extremely important factor to consider as rates on a safari can range from +/- $200 - $1300 per person, per night (excluding transportation) depending on the accommodation and style of safari. The more luxurious the accommodation - the more expensive the safari. Providing an appoximate budget to work with will enable your safari consultant to recommend appropriate accommodation/services for you to consider. Your budget may help determine which country will work best for you, as some countries are more expensive to visit than others. Budget may also influence the time of year you choose to travel as off peak travel is less expensive than peak season travel. Finally, budget may determine the length of your safari. Nights on safari, because they include all meals, game activities, park fees, ect. are generally more expensive than non-safari nights. For example stays in Cape Town, or along the Garden Route, or at a beach resort, where fewer meals may be included are generally less expensive. Consider your budget carefully before you begin to plan your dream trip.

An important key to planning a successful safari is good communication; the more information you give your professional consultant about your "ideal safari", the better we will be able to custom design a safari for you that will meet and exceed your expectations.

Southern Africa Versus East Africa

Africa is a vast continent, distances are great, and a common mistake many visitors make is trying to see the whole continent in a single 2-3 week trip. We recommend that travelers do not try and cover too much territory on their trip as they will end up spending far too much time in airports and far less time seeing the wonders of Africa. It is important to note that flights between countries in Africa are not always frequent and can be very expensive. Travelers on safari usually choose to visit one or two regions, either Southern Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia & Malawi) or East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, & Rwanda).

We are often asked about whether it is better to choose Southern Africa or Eastern Africa for a first time safari visitor? The answer to that question is that it depends on what you are looking for. It is really hard to generalize as there are no hard and fast rules, and for every statement we can make about one destination versus the other, there are always exceptions. So we are going to list just a few of the highlights of eadch destination and we recommend that you discuss your options futher with a professional safari consultant.

East Africa Highlights
For Maasai culture Kenya and Tanzania are the countries to visit as you can witness Maasai herdsman and their vast herds of cattle as you travel around the country to the various games reserves. There are many opportunites to visit Massai cultural bomas, and village markets. Here the Massai live in very clost proximity to wildlife.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site. It is home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife species anywhere.

The Serengeti Plains/Masai Mara Game Reserve hosts the largest migration of wildebeest and zebra on the planet, closely followed by the predators including lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena.

Mount Kilimanjaro , "The Rooftop of Africa". Kilimanjaro climb itineraries are available. These are non-technical climbs to the summit at 19,000 feet.

Lakes of the Great Rift Valley offering excellent birding.

Overall, East Africa is generally less expensive, as most often transportation is via road, which is generally less costly than flying from point to point in small aircraft. There are also lodges here that are larger and accommodate more guests thereby; they are less expensive. Higher volume=lesser price. That being said, there are exceptions including some largely under-utilized, more remote gams reserves offing accommodation in smaller exclusive lodges where guests fly from place to place. Examples of these parks include the Selous and Ruaha. Game drives in these parks are undertaken in open vehicles and there are safaris by boat, and walking safaris as well. People are few and animals are many.

Beautiful beaches on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Many types of lodging are available here from large, 4 star luxury resorts, to much smaller Robinson Crusoe-type, chic hideaways, where excellent diving, snorkeling, fishing, and most other water sports, are offered. Many of these beach resorts also have spas for those looking for total relaxation.

Southern Africa Highlights

Excellent Wildlife Experiences offered in open vehicles.

The camps and lodges in the game parks are generally smaller and more intimate offering more personalized service. The lodges and camps may be further apart as well, putting fewer vehicles in any one area at a time. The result is that game drives tend to be less crowded.

Night game drives give guests the opportunity to view nocturnal species that may otherwise be missed on day time game drives. Many predators are more active after dark.

Safaris by boat are offered through the Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world. Canoe and boat excursions on many of the rivers in Africa including the mighty Zambezi River are also offered.

Walking Safaris with professional guides.

Spectacular Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This is also the center for adrenal pumping activities such as white-water rafting, bungi jumping gorge swinging, zip lines, abseiling, micro-lighting, and more.

Elephant and horse back Safaris.

Luxury rail journeys through Africa.

Beautiful cities like Cape Town offering gourmet food & wine, vineyards, spectacular costal scenery, penguins, whales and great white sharks, and botanic gardens with exotic plant species found only in South Africa.

Luxury resorts and top-notch spas

World class gold courses.

Cultural Experiences with many tribes such as the Zulu and the Bushman Township Tours and visits to Robben Island, a World Heritage Site.
